HDMI ports should be assigned by capability and job
HDMI carries digital video and audio, but identical-looking television ports may support different features. One might handle audio return, another the highest gaming signal, while all accept ordinary sources. Count ports only after mapping devices and required capabilities. Four mysterious rectangles are not a connection plan; they are a tiny parking lot with no signs.
List every source and destination
Write down game consoles, disc players, streaming boxes, cable or satellite receivers, computers, cameras, and audio equipment. Note which devices connect directly to the television and which may pass through a receiver or switch. Leave one spare if frequent temporary connections matter.
Then read the exact TV manual. Label each port with supported resolution, refresh rate, HDR formats, variable refresh, low-latency features, and audio-return capability where stated. Do not assume every port is equivalent.
Reserve the audio-return port
ARC and eARC let a designated HDMI connection send television audio to a compatible soundbar or receiver. That port can often accept video too, but using it for audio may determine the rest of your map. Read ARC versus eARC before buying cables or adapters.
Both connected devices and their settings must support the desired feature. HDMI control options may also affect power and volume behavior.
Match gaming devices to gaming-capable inputs
High refresh, variable refresh, and automatic low-latency features may appear on only certain inputs or signal combinations. Connect the most demanding compatible system there. Confirm enhanced input mode if the manual requires it and check the television's signal-information screen.

Choose a cable for the required signal
A cable does not improve picture quality by being expensive or wrapped in heroic adjectives. It either carries the intended digital signal reliably or it does not. Use a certified cable category suitable for the required bandwidth and length, and avoid sharp bends, pinched runs, or unsupported connector weight.
For in-wall installation, follow local electrical and building rules and use properly rated cable. A cable rated for a signal is not automatically rated to live inside a wall.
Plan access before mounting
Rear-facing ports may become difficult to reach after wall mounting. Right-angle adapters can add mechanical strain or compatibility trouble; use only suitable, well-supported parts. Troubleshoot one link at a time
If a signal fails, test the device directly on a known-working port with a known-suitable short cable. Confirm source output, input mode, and firmware. Remove switches and receivers temporarily. Change one component at a time so the culprit cannot hide in a group project.
Verify the exact product
Port counts and features can vary by model, region, year, and screen size. Consult current official specifications and the manual, then confirm with controlled testing. Buy enough correctly featured inputs for the devices you actually own. “Future-proof” is usually marketing; a well-documented map is at least household-proof until someone brings home another console.
