Start a new TV with a reversible baseline
The first useful picture setup is not a list of secret numbers. It is a sequence: choose home mode, select a restrained preset, control room light, disable unnecessary enhancements, verify the signal, and change one setting at a time. Choose home mode and a restrained preset
During initial setup, select home rather than retail or demo mode. Retail modes are designed to compete under bright store lighting and may reset changes. Then try a cinema, movie, filmmaker, or similarly restrained preset for video.

Match screen light to the room
Adjust the control that changes overall panel light—often backlight or OLED pixel brightness—to suit daytime and nighttime conditions. Do not confuse it with a black-level control also sometimes named brightness. Read the on-screen description and manual.
Automatic brightness can be useful, but test whether it changes distractingly. ENERGY STAR notes that automatic brightness control adjusts TV brightness relative to room light. A stable room is easier to judge than a window staging a sunrise halfway through setup.
Reduce enhancement before adding it
Set sharpness near the neutral position described by the manual; excessive edge enhancement creates outlines. Disable or reduce dynamic contrast, exaggerated color, noise reduction on clean sources, and motion interpolation. Then add only the features that solve a visible problem.

Preserve the full picture
Turn off overscan for modern digital sources when the television provides a just-scan, screen-fit, or equivalent option. Confirm that menus and test patterns reach every edge without cropping. For a computer input, check text clarity and the correct input label.
Do not adjust service menus. They can contain controls not intended for routine use and may cause damage or difficult-to-reverse behavior.
Verify SDR, HDR, and each input
Televisions may store different settings for apps, inputs, standard video, HDR, and games. Play each signal type and confirm the selected mode. Enable enhanced input capability only where required and supported.
Save game mode separately so low latency is not lost. A single global configuration may be a myth told by people with only one cable.
Use familiar content and patterns

Record every change and its original value. If the image gets worse, reset only that picture mode and begin again.
Stop when problems stop
Without instruments, detailed white balance and color-management controls are poor targets. Model-to-model and unit variation make borrowed values unreliable. A professional calibration can be worthwhile for reference viewing, but a clean preset with sensible room light solves much of the chaos.
